The Open Philanthropy Project recommended a grant of £2,000,000 ($2,688,000 at the time of conversion) to the Centre for Effective Altruism (CEA) for general support. CEA is a central organization within the effective altruism (EA) community that we believe has a good track record of helping the community grow. This grant falls within our focus area of growing and empowering the community of people focused on global catastrophic risk reduction.
We wrote more about our decision to support CEA in the writeup for our first grant to it, made in March 2017, at which point we said we planned to renew for between $1.25 million and $2.5 million. Consistent with our updated thinking on grant check-ins, we used our subsequent conversations with CEA to collect and internally report updates, lessons, and impact, and will prioritize publicly sharing especially informative or unusually clear or large lessons and impact when we believe they will be useful to emerging philanthropists.
