Matt joined Open Philanthropy in November 2022 where he works on ways to safely accelerate scientific progress and innovation. Matt is a senior fellow at the Institute for Progress, where he was previously Senior Innovation Economist. He taught economics for several years at Iowa State University, and worked on science policy at the US Department of Agriculture after obtaining a PhD in economics from Iowa State University. He is the creator of the living literature review New Things Under the Sun, which he continues to maintain as part of his work at Open Philanthropy.
